When Your LG Microwave Fan Keeps Running: Know Which Fan You Hear

Fan noise does not by itself mean an LG microwave is cooking. Depending on the model, an automatic vent fan or a cooling fan may operate without a cooking countdown. Check the complete model’s manual before treating that behavior as a fault. Unexpected cooking is a separate concern.

An over-the-range microwave does more than heat leftovers. It also sits above another source of heat and may contain several systems that move air. The most useful first observation is therefore specific: what is running, what does the display show, and what happened just before the sound began?

For Indian Rocks Beach households, a kitchen shared by family or visiting guests can make that sequence harder to reconstruct. Leave a short note with the model number and normal operating instructions so the next person does not mistake every fan sound for an active cooking cycle.

Separate three different observations

The vent fan above the cooktop

This fan moves air from the cooking area. LG’s LMV1680 manual describes an automatic heat response that starts the vent fan and may temporarily prevent manual shutoff. That is an example for that model family, not a universal timer or setting for every LG microwave.

A cooling fan inside the appliance

LG also describes post-cooking cooling operation on applicable models. Its purpose differs from selecting a new cooking time. A cooling indication, where fitted, can help explain the behavior; the exact display wording and duration depend on the appliance.

An unintended cooking cycle

A display counting down a cooking program that nobody selected, apparent heating when it should be idle, smoke or unusual electrical symptoms deserve separate attention. Do not dismiss these observations as normal just because some fan operation is automatic.

Record the sequence before arranging service

If there is no immediate hazard, note whether the range was recently used, whether the microwave had just finished a cooking program, and which display indicators remain on. Record when the fan begins and whether it eventually stops as the manual describes.

Use a short video from a safe distance if the sound is difficult to explain. Include the display and describe whether the sound comes from the vent area or elsewhere. Photograph the complete model label without removing the microwave, trim or cabinet panels.

Avoid repeated resets that erase useful observations. Do not run an empty microwave as a test, block an air opening to quiet the sound, or attempt to override a heat-protection feature.

Set firm safety boundaries

Stop using the appliance if the door or latch is damaged, it starts an unrequested cooking cycle, or there are electrical warning signs. Disconnect power only when it is safe to do so and arrange qualified service. For smoke or fire, follow emergency guidance and call emergency services when needed.

Microwave covers and internal electrical parts are not homeowner inspection points. Dangerous stored electrical energy can remain after disconnection. Do not remove the outer cabinet, probe switches or defeat an interlock.

A fan that remains on after the surrounding area has cooled, runs differently from the manual’s description, or produces a new grinding sound also warrants assessment. The cause cannot be identified from sound alone.

Frequently asked questions

Does a running fan mean the microwave is heating food?

No. Ventilation and cooling can operate separately from cooking. Use the display and model instructions to interpret what you observe.

Why does the fan ignore the Off button?

Some models temporarily override manual vent control during a heat-protection response. Check the exact manual; do not bypass the feature.

Should every LG microwave show a cooling message?

No. Displays and operating features vary by model and design.

Can I unplug it to repair the fan myself?

Disconnecting power does not make internal microwave work safe. Leave internal inspection and repair to a qualified professional.

What if it starts cooking by itself?

Stop using it, disconnect power if safe and seek service. Treat unintended cooking separately from ordinary fan operation.
