When Should You Change Your Refrigerator Water Filter?

Are You Replacing Your Refrigerator Water Filter?

The water filter in your refrigerator keeps your drinking water clean only if it is replaced on a regular basis to ensure its best performance. Your schedule to change the water filter should be based on how much you use it so it may need to be replaced more or less often depending on your usage. If you’re not sure how often you need to replace it, just go by the manufacturer's specifications for normal usage. If you don’t use it that much, then don’t worry about changing it more than once a year but as a general rule of thumb, you should consider replacing it on a six-month schedule.

Why should you replace your filter on a regular basis?

As you use the drinking water dispenser, your filter is working to get rid of all the impurities and contaminants and over time, the filter becomes less effective at removing these contaminants, therefore, it must be replaced. A water filter that becomes very dirty, will actually grow more bacteria and add this bacteria to your water, and eventually, you will be drinking dirty and contaminated water every time you fill up your cup. Another thing to think about is if you live in an area where you have very hard water. Having hard water will cause minerals to build up faster and you must consider replacing your filter more often. Sometimes you can tell when your filter needs to be replaced if the water starts looking cloudy, smells bad, or tastes bad. If you change your filter on a regular six-month schedule, you should not experience this, but if you do live in an area where the water quality is not very good, then you will need to adjust that schedule to replace it sooner.

How do you change the water filter?

It is usually an easy process to change your refrigerator water filter. I highly recommend replacing your drinking water filter with a name-brand OEM filter because generic filters, even though they are cheaper, will get you what you pay for. Generic filters are not quality and will not do a great job at filtering water and may cause you issues with your water dispenser. The water filters are usually located at the top of the refrigerator or at the bottom wall and usually have a release button or a twist and pull method to unlock the filter. Some water filters are a little more complicated to get in and out. It may require that you locate your owner's manual to find and use those instructions or give us a call and I will be happy to bring an OEM water filter and replace it for you.
