Protect Your Appliances From Lightning Strikes!

Updated: Jul 23

Florida is the lightning capital of the U.S. and lightning can strike our area over 100 times in less than 15 minutes. It is important to take precautions with all of your appliances so that they do not suffer lightning damage during a thunderstorm. The best thing you can do is unplug all of your appliances but this is not easy to do and no one ever unplugs their refrigerator. So, what do we do? The best alternative to disconnecting all of your appliances in order to protect them is to make sure all of your outlets are on surge protectors and your appliances are plugged into a working surge protector. We always recommend that if you are going to be away for a few days, especially over the summer, unplug all of your appliances except the refrigerator and make sure the refrigerator is plugged into a surge protector to prevent damage from an electrical storm.

With lightning strike damage, you will not even notice that your appliance is failing at first because it does not immediately fail. The discharge produced after a lightning strike can cause an appliance, like your refrigerator, to overheat and this will reduce the life of your refrigerator. The best thing for your appliances at home is to have a whole grounding system in which all the appliances are protected. Your electric company can help you with this by just calling and asking them about a whole home surge protector. The stormy summer season in Florida is our busiest when it comes to getting phone calls from customers whose appliance is now dead after lightning has struck their home. These are usually expensive computer board replacements that could have been prevented by taking precautions. Again, our best advice is to have all appliances and anything that plugs into an outlet be plugged into a good surge protector first. If a lightning strike does happen to you, we are here to help get your appliances back up and running again.
