Refrigerator Losing Its Cool?

Updated: Jul 23

Do you need a refrigerator repair?

There are some quick things to check before you call for help. This can save you time and money by following some easy diagnostics that you can do yourself at home.

Does your refrigerator feel like it’s getting too warm or is it freezing items?

Check your temperature reading, and settings inside the refrigerator to make sure that they were not bumped or changed accidentally. Simply checking that and making any adjustments can be a quick fix.

If that is not the culprit, try unplugging your refrigerator and checking on the condition of the condenser coils. Make sure that they are not suffocating with dust or anything else that can be too close to the refrigerator because they do need proper airflow to operate correctly. No need to panic if the coils are dirty, just grab your vacuum and get all the dust off of there. Give it a few hours to see if the temperature adjusts after making any changes or cleaning the coils.

Is there a problem with the freezer side of your refrigerator? Are normally frozen foods now thawing in your freezer?

Do a visual inspection of the thermostat in your freezer to check for any appearance of issues that you can see. Your freezer thermostat may be in need of replacement. If you have a multi-meter at home, you can check the reading to see if it is within range.

Does your refrigerator have an ice maker? Did it stop making ice?

A common occurrence is a frozen water line or water valve. Try running a hairdryer on the water line or valve if it appears to be frozen, but be careful not to hold it in the same spot too long because plastic parts do melt under high heat. Melting the ice that has clogged the waterline can get your water flowing again and the ice maker is in working order. If that doesn’t work, it may be something else or you just need a whole new ice maker. If that’s the case, just give us a call, and we can figure out what’s going on and get it fixed or replaced in no time.
