There are a number of reasons that your dishwasher might be leaving your dishes dirty, even after running through a full wash cycle. The most common reasons are easy fixes that you can resolve on your own.
1. Rinse all the food off the dishes before loading them into the dishwasher. Even though you might see TV commercials with a family loading up the dishwasher with food caked on all the dishes and then you see all the dishes coming out super clean, this is not necessarily true. Dishwashers are not garbage disposals or trash cans. The food that is rinsed off can eventually clog the filter, drain pump, or drain line, leaving you with an expensive repair. So, make sure that all your dishes are thoroughly rinsed before putting them into your dishwasher.
2. Make sure your dishwasher is getting hot water to it. The most effective way to accomplish this is to run the water at your sink all the way on the hottest setting until it is hot and then you can start your dishwasher. Your dishwasher needs hot water in order to break down all the grime that might be left on your dishes, especially anything oily. Cold water is just not effective in breaking down any of that grease.
3. Make sure that you are not overloading the dishwasher and also make sure you are selecting the appropriate washing cycle to clean the dishes. If the dishes that you have put in the dishwasher are very dirty, you definitely want to use a full wash cycle. If you are like me, I put the dishes in the dishwasher that look clean, but they still need to be washed and sanitized. I can get away with the quick cycle and my dishes will be cleaned efficiently and effectively.
Have you ever found that your dishwashers are clean and sanitized but they have a chalky-looking film all over them? You can really see it on your clear drinking glasses. If your house water is very hard then this is probably the culprit. Hard water minerals can leave white filmy, streaks, and spots. If you have a water softener and you are still getting an ugly film on those clear drinking glasses you may want to try using less detergent and make sure that your rinse aid is always full. Rinse aid is very important because it helps keep the water from sitting on the dishes. Make sure the water temperature is hot enough for the wash cycle and make sure that you always use the high-temperature dry option. By only using the air dry option, you are going to get the spots all over the place.
